“ I want to inspire people. I want someone to look at me and say — Because of you, I didn’t give up.” – Unknown
When I was young, I liked inspiring quotes and telling people about how they should use inspiration as their drive to achieve what they want. I joined different groups and non-government organizations(NGO) and became a young speaker to youths like me. I like talking on podiums and telling stories and giving speeches. That made me very busy when I was at a very young age. That made me think of becoming someone who instills passion and dreams to become real. That made me think of becoming a teacher.
I had to find a job when I turned eighteen and for that matter, I had to start working for myself. I started working as customer service representative and sales. I was good at handling customers and I liked it but it wasn’t what I really wanted to do. I ended up quitting my job almost every after 6 months since I easily get tired of it. It wasn’t my cup of tea. It wasn’t what I wanted to do. It wasn’t my passion.
I started looking for jobs that are not connected with call centers. Then, I saw a job post about working online and teaching and just like other applicants, I applied and eventually got hired. Everything you will do will be in a virtual environment and that was definitely overwhelming for me as a first – timer. Doubts came in and I thought about not continuing it as it was very different from what I have grown accustomed to. Plus, the fact you’ll be teaching foreign students definitely adds pressure to what I felt.
I can still remember, the first lesson I had with my student. It was all mixed up. They say there are butterflies in your stomach, but that doesn’t feel like butterflies at all. It felt like it was revolving. It was definitely surreal but you know what? I loved it. I loved every minute of it. I love how I can help people and help them to reach and achieve their goals in their lives.
I realized online education is not just a job for me but it is a passion. A passion that ignites another passion. It ignites the desires of every student I face every day to learn English and do what they want —- be it to give a speech in a convention they will be attending or even just to learn how to speak English as a language.
I realized that your students are not just people who pays for you just because you teach them. They mean the world to me now. Every day, I see them and think how they progressed from the first day we met to today is, in fact, one of the most rewarding feelings I have ever felt in my life. It gives me the sense of contentment. Not to mention, the never-ending thank you’s they say when they learn something.
I love every part of my experience as an online teacher. I love what I am doing now and this is my third year in this industry, I don’t think I am going to get tired of this any time soon.
